On August 16th, 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a total of $244.5 million to the advancement of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) practices. This $244.5 million is part of the Fueling Aviation’s Sustainable Transition (FAST) Program that allocates a total of $291 million in awards to projects. The $244.5 million donation to SAF advancement spans over 22 projects dedicated to help the production, transportation, blending, storage of and scoping studies for SAF. The remaining $46.5 million released under the FAST Program will be spread among 14 alternative projects working to develop, demonstrate, and apply low-emission aviation technology.

Within the 22 SAF projects awarded by the FAA, $202,500 was given to the University of Virginia’s (UVA) Coalition Working Towards SAF for IAD, headed by James Lambert and Lisa Colosi Peterson. This coalition operates within UVA and under the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Logistics Systems (CCALS). The coalition’s study focuses the modeling and analysis of supplying Washington Dulles Airport with SAF.
