Virginia has finalized an initial plan to facilitate the roll-out of electric vehicles. This plan involved the input of nearly 100 individuals and dozens of relevant Virginia electric vehicle stakeholders, as well as collaboration with state and local government. Virginia Clean Cities today announced Virginia’s Initial Electric Vehicle Plan at the Governor’s Energy Conference in Richmond.
“EVs represent an economic opportunity. So far in 2010, 84 new jobs and $23.5 million in new investment have been announced in the electric charger and battery component sectors in Virginia.” Said Chelsea Jenkins, Virginia Clean Cities Executive Director. “This plan will help Virginia in the adoption of electric vehicles in order to reduce vehicle emissions, increase energy independence, and generate positive economic development for the Commonwealth.”

Electric vehicles are here. Come see GM’s new electric Volt here in Richmond today at the Governor’s Conference on Energy in the exhibit hall by the Virginia Clean Cities booth.
The Chevrolet Volt is General Motor’s electric vehicle with extended-range capability. It offers a total driving range of about 350 miles on a full battery charge and tank of gas. For up to the first 40 miles, the vehicle drives gas- and tailpipe-emissions-free using electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas-powered, engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 310 miles on a full tank.
Production begins on the Volt next month and initially it will be available to Chevrolet customers in the Washington D.C. Area as well as California, New York, Michigan, Connecticut, Texas, and New Jersey.
