The Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ) offers reimbursement to state agencies and local governments in air quality non-attainment and maintenance areas for transitioning to alternative fuels like electricity, natural gas, or propane autogas. The reimbursement, capped at an average of $10,000, covers incremental costs for reasonable aftermarket conversions or the purchase of a new clean fuel vehicle. The annual funding pool is $1 million, supporting new or retrofitted light and heavy-duty vehicles using propane autogas, compressed natural gas, or electricity.
