As a lifelong conservative with a deep appreciation for technology and innovation, my decision to own an electric vehicle (EV), specifically a Tesla, may seem surprising to some within my political circle. However, my upbringing in a household that embraced the early adoption of technology, coupled with my hands-on experience with cars from a young age, has led me to recognize the economic, environmental, and practical advantages of EV ownership.
Transitioning from my trusty 2015 Nissan Rogue Select, which served me well but was nearing its 200,000-mile mark, I embarked on a journey to explore the potential of owning a Tesla. Renting a Tesla Model 3 from Hertz for two out-of-town trips proved to be a transformative experience. The sheer thrill of acceleration, coupled with the environmental benefits and cost savings, convinced me that my next vehicle would indeed be an EV.
In January of 2024, I leaped and purchased a 2022 Tesla Model 3 RWD from Hertz for $20,000, with the bonus of a $4,000 rebate in 2025. The economic advantages of owning an EV are undeniable. Not only did I acquire a vehicle with superior performance for the price, but I also stand to benefit from reduced fuel and maintenance costs over its lifetime.
On the environmental front, EVs offer a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. By transitioning to electric transportation, I am contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future for generations to come.
Addressing concerns about the electric grid’s capacity to support EV charging, it’s essential to dispel the misconception that trickle or mobile charging is impractical. With the proliferation of charging infrastructure, including an extensive network of supercharging stations and ongoing developments in this area, EV owners can conveniently charge their vehicles across the country.
Moreover, EVs boast advanced safety features and undergo rigorous national highway safety testing, ensuring the well-being of both drivers and passengers. As a conservative, I prioritize personal responsibility and safety, factors that align seamlessly with the ethos of EV ownership.
I urge my fellow conservatives who share a passion for cars to consider renting a Tesla for a day to experience firsthand the benefits of electric driving. By embracing innovation and supporting American companies like Tesla, we uphold the principles of free enterprise and bolster our nation’s economy.
While some may advocate for “buying American,” it’s essential to recognize that my Tesla Model 3 was manufactured in Fremont, California, by an American company. As technology continues to evolve, I hope to see my fellow conservatives embrace the freedom of choice in vehicle ownership, whether electric or traditional. By fostering an open-minded approach to infrastructure improvements and embracing the potential of electric transportation, we can ensure a brighter and more prosperous future for all Americans.
