50 STATIONS TO OPEN IN 10 CITIES BY SEPTEMBER

HERNDON, Virginia (JUNE 22, 2017) – Washington, D.C. area drivers can now charge their electric vehicles (EV) at upgraded fast charging stations at eight locations across Maryland and Virginia. In cooperation with EVgo Services LLC, the newly upgraded dual-standard fast chargers are the first projects funded as part of Electrify America’s planned $2 billion investment in electric vehicle infrastructure and awareness programs over the next 10 years.

As part of this initial investment, 50 new and upgraded 50kW dual-standard fast chargers will be installed at premier retail properties in 10 major metro markets across the country, including Boston, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Portland (Oregon), Seattle and Washington D.C.

“In order to satisfy the needs of electric vehicle owners and further increase the adoption of EVs, there is a great demand for charging stations that are fast, reliable and convenient,” said Mark McNabb, chief executive officer of Electrify America. “These stations in Maryland and Virginia are the first Electrify America investments that will be focused on meeting those consumer needs by providing advanced technology that is accessible and easy to use.”

The Electrify America-funded chargers will add additional charging capacity to existing EVgo charging station sites as well as upgrades that will provide greater access to Combined Charging Standard (CCS)-compatible vehicles. These investments create a more convenient charging experience for drivers through increased availability and reliability of chargers at each location.

Each 50kW charger is capable of providing up to 100 miles of electric range in approximately 30 minutes. Drivers can access the chargers with an EVgo-compatible account; however, the chargers will also be accessible in the near future via Electrify America’s own open-standard network which is currently under development with industry partners.

The newly installed fast chargers in the Washington, D.C. area are located at Pentagon City Fashion Centre in Arlington, Virginia; Ashburn Village Center in Ashburn, Virginia; Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets in Leesburg, Virginia; Bowie Town Center in Bowie, Maryland; Newgate Shopping Center in Centreville, Virginia; Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center in Woodbridge, Virginia; Dulles Town Circle in Dulles, Virginia; and St. Charles Towne Center in Waldorf, Maryland.

This initial investment by Electrify America is part of the company’s National Zero-Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) Investment Plan, which calls for the deployment of next generation charging stations across major highways and in metropolitan areas outside California over the next two years. Charging technology as part of this broader roll-out will include up to 150kW charging in metros and up to 350kW charging along highways. At three to seven times the power output of existing available fast charging equipment, EV drivers will soon experience refueling times much closer to that of traditional gas stations.

Electrify America has committed to work with many existing electric vehicle infrastructure vendors and suppliers. EVgo will manage and operate the 50 chargers as part of this project on behalf of Electrify America. Charging hardware will be supplied by BTC Power and ABB Inc with numerous local electrical contractors involved in the installation process.
