SOLVE IT: $80k to Pennington Gap’s Project Prize

January 3, 2025

The Town of Pennington Gap has been awarded $80,000 in Phase One of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Solutions for Lasting, Viable Energy Infrastructure Technologies (SOLVE IT) Prize. This funding supports community engagement and planning for renewable energy opportunities within communities and works in partnership with Appalachian Voices and the Solar Workgroup of Southwest Virginia, two other community-based projects. The SOLVE IT program helps with the implementation of innovative clean energy solutions tailored to a community’s individual needs.

As a Phase One awardee, Pennington Gap is eligible to apply for both Phase Two and Three funding, awarding up to $150k and $500k, with deadlines ending on Nov. 25 of 2024 and Jun. 12 of 2025. Only recipients of Phase Two funding may compete for Phase Three. If their applications are successful, Pennington Gap could receive up to $650,000 in additional funding towards the program, allowing for the implementation of solar energy projects, energy storage and emergency services, electric vehicle charging stations, and community benefit agreements for projects.
